Everett Public Schools
Company Overview
EVERETT PUBLIC SCHOOLS – One half hour north of Seattle, Washington, in the beautiful Pacific Northwest
Everett Public Schools’ staff are passionate about doing the world’s most important work – ensuring that each student learns to high standards and graduates on time. Our 26 schools are high powered learning centers that engage 18,700 culturally rich students who speak 50 different languages from every corner of the world. Staff and students are encouraged and supported to be life-long learners and community leaders.
A COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS ITS SCHOOLS
The district encompasses the cities of Everett and Mill Creek and large swaths of rural and suburban unincorporated Snohomish County. Voters historically support school finance issues as evidenced by school buildings that are modern or completely modernized on a well-planned, 40-year cycle. Citizens volunteer by the thousands in classrooms and schools, and businesses and service organizations are invaluable education partners. More than 750 individuals and over 100 businesses support the Everett Public Schools Foundation a variety of ways, including an annual spring breakfast that earns $85,000 each year.
HISTORIC BEGINNINGS, STRONG FUTURE, SCENIC OUTLOOK
Residents enjoy the richness of Everett’s historic roots and the growth of the Mill Creek community as a relatively new suburban enclave. Nestled between Puget Sound and the Cascade Mountains, the region is graced with a diverse concentration of breathtaking scenery, yearlong activities and unique attractions. Recreation abounds here — on land, on sea, and in the air. Opportunities for cultural richness, broad economic diversification and higher education are plentiful. Everett is the county seat and a highly-recognized medical center. A number of aerospace and high tech corporations and the U.S. Navy call Everett and its vicinities home. A future University of Washington satellite campus is anticipated and will augment Everett Community College as a post high school learning option for students wanting to continue living, working and learning in this area.
CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
Everett students consistently perform well on state and national assessments. For the last two years, district scores on the state’s standards-based tests, at every grade level and in every subject tested, have been higher than state scores. Twice as many middle school students are taking advanced math classes now than were just two years ago. The on-time graduation rate has risen from just 50% six years ago to 80%.
A LIVING STRATEGIC PLAN
For more than 20 years, student learning improvements have been framed by a strategic plan with three main objectives – student learning, an organization that supports student learning and partnerships which enrich student learning. The plan is revisited routinely by the community. The Board of Directors and the administrative leadership team partner each year to measure and adjust it. The plan directs the superintendent’s work, the superintendent’s staff and the schools. School board meetings center around strategic plan progress reports.
HIGH STANDARDS; LOW TURNOVER
Teachers and administrators frequently present at state and national conferences and have been named best-in-the-state in several categories. More than half of Everett’s teachers have master’s degrees. High expectations are rewarded with a high commitment rate; nine out of 10 teachers stay in this highly desirable system once they are selected to work here.
AN EXPERIENCED BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Everett Public Schools five Directors have a combined tenure of nearly 50 years. As elected board members with six-year terms of office, these tirelessly dedicated elected officials advocate on behalf of each student and exemplify organizational governance by overseeing the district’s progress toward strategic plan goals.
CAREFUL AND PRUDENT FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
Already highly rated, the district earned an improved bond rating of AA from Standard and Poor’s in September 2008. This places Everett among the six highest ranking districts in the state; only one other ranks higher.
